Data Literacy is the ability to read, understand, and talk about data.

Data is simply information that you can use to help you understand a question or problem. Data can be numbers such as test scores and percentiles, or it can involve observations and feedback. Different kinds of data can help you understand different aspects of a situation.

Being able to ask questions and communicate about data is an important tool for family-school collaboration. MASFEC is launching a new initiative to support educators and families to build their data literacy. Check out the information below to learn more about how different types of data can inform conversations about student learning.

Educational Achievement Testing

Educational Achievement testing focuses on a student’s current achievement level at the time of testing in areas such as reading, mathematics, oral language, and more. Achievement tests can also be used to screen students for learning disabilities. Comprehensive achievement tests can be administered by a school psychologist, mental health professional, special education teacher, or classroom teacher.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Screenings

Social emotional learning screenings, or SEL screenings for short, focus on a student’s self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. It is important to remember that SEL is not the same as mental health, but SEL screenings can be used as a tool in the early identification of mental health concerns.
