The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is seeking public comment. In other words, they would like to hear from you!

Massachusetts has received funding from the Stronger Connections Grant program. School districts will be able to apply for new grants from this program next year. The goal is to offer safe, healthy, and supportive learning opportunities and environments. The Department is seeking feedback on how to define which districts are most in need of support. They have proposed the following definition of “High-Need Local Education Agency”:

A local education agency with a ‘Local Education Agency Need Index’ (the sum of a local education agency’s percent of high needs studentsout-of-school suspension rate, and chronic absenteeism rate [missing 20 percent of days] for 2022) above 80, plus any local education agency identified for the Rethinking Discipline initiative.

What do you think about the proposed definition? Please send your questions or comments to achievement@doe.mass.edu by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23.
