Ramadan is the holiest month in the Muslim calendar. During this month, Muslims all over the world reconnect to their religion through fasting, sharing meals, self-reflecting, and reciting the Quran.

If you want to learn more about this beautiful holiday season, here are some picture books that you and your child can explore together.

The Gift of Ramadan, by Rabiah York Lumbard: Sophia, the book’s protagonist, believes that she is finally old enough to fast for Ramadan. But when the tempting smell of treats leads her to break her fast early, she wonders how else she can participate in the holiday. A universal story about young children finding their place in their families and in their faith.

It’s Ramadan, Curious George, by Hena Khan: The beloved monkey Curious George learns about Ramadan from his Muslim friends. Note that this book is aimed at non-Muslim children.

Every year, the list of new titles about Ramadan grows. Remember, when choosing a book about Ramadan or Islam for your child, look for those with Muslim authors and illustrators.

A former public school teacher, senior policy analyst at the New York City Council, and Fulbright Scholar, she currently consults for Sesame Workshop. She holds a doctorate in education from Columbia Teachers College.
