Visions of Community, the annual conference of the Federation for Children with Special Needs, offers unparalleled information and inspiration for supporting the success of students with disabilities.
This year, a major emphasis of the conference will be issues of educational equity and finding ways for schools, families and communities to work together to support the learning of all students.
As a program housed within the Federation, MASFAC is a major organizer of the conference. We hope to share the message that, just as a space launch relies on a team of people working together to plan and complete a mission, families, schools, and communities can work together to launch children’s learning. When we all work together throughout the year on our shared mission, student learning takes off!
This year we are particularly excited to welcome some amazing keynote speakers including Dr. Rosemarie Allen, whose life’s work is centered on ensuring children have access to high-quality early childhood programs that are developmentally and culturally appropriate. As an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, she emphasizes teaching practices that address the ways in which issues of equity, privilege, and power impact student learning.
The conference includes two youth keynote speakers, including Sophie Scrimgeour, is an aspiring Special Education Teacher and recent college graduate who was diagnosed at the age of 12 with Asperger’s Syndrome and has dedicated herself to leadership and service to other students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including as they transition from school to adult life.
